EXPECTATIONS, depicts the struggle between what we desire for ourselves and our familial obligations. This is personified by Chris and Matt Taylor, identical twins, who are trying to win their overbearing father’s approval and acquire their trust funds. Their best friend and roommate, Aiden O’Boyle, left his family behind in Ireland to pursue a career in dance.
Chris: Google sure can tell you some fascinating stuff. For example, they did a count of all the books ever written, upwards of three hundred million, if you were curious. Oh and apparently, my boyfriend was killed in a car accident at sixteen.
Funny. Math has never been my strong suit, but it seems difficult to be dating someone who’s been dead for eight years.
I’m getting way ahead of myself here. Let me back up.
After rehearsal, I came home to do some investigating on Aiden’s family. Just to see if his father was still alive. I figured if he wasn’t there might be a possibility for him to connect with his sister and maybe his mom.
The first thing I stumbled across when researching was a newspaper article detailing Aiden’s death. The lack of journalist integrity astounded me. Short obit with nothing more than a picture, date of death, and short note on cause. I noted that there were no services. That was just about the only thing that made sense. You know, it’s really hard to have a funeral without a body.
I have to be honest, reading those words brought an illogical aching to my chest. Of course the story was fabricated; it just hurt me to even think about it. Then, it made me angry. Furious even. From what Aiden told me about his father, I had no doubts that he wrote the article.
Interestingly, the next hit on the Google page was Aiden’s father’s obituary. Anyone blame me for feeling just a little bit happy? No? Ok, good. Anyway, his death was a big news story. Front page, above the fold and everything. The farm burned down one day while he slept. The police investigation concluded that it was accidental. I read over it with half-hearted interest. He wasn’t my concern, really. The last line caught my attention, “Desmond Cain was survived only by his daughter Meghan.
So, where is she? Another Google search and I got my answer.
